Andy Warhol’s fantasy Montauk

And now for the world’s first summer sunset perfume, inspired by Andy Warhol’s fantasy Montauk— where a quirkily quaint little fishing village greets the Studio 54 crowd. (Trust us, this fragrance is like no other.)


These days, beaches inspire nothing short of reverence.  We savor as never before their bracing aquatic air, their pristine sand dunes and crashing ocean waves.  But back in the hedonistic 1970s and ‘80s, Andy Warhol had a very different take on Montauk—his getaway retreat from downtown New York.  “ … a little town on the end of Long Island,” is how he described Montauk, adding, “The next stop is Lisbon, Portugal.”  Even so, this drowsy, end-of-the-line salt-water fishing haven was soon made world-famous by Warhol and his entourage as a Studio 54 by the sea. What’s more, it served as a secluded vantage point for the artist to observe his socialites and celebrities at play—their number including Jackie O, John Lennon, Salvador Dali, and the Rolling Stones on tour.

Montauk-in-extremis is the subject of the fifth in Bond No. 9’s series of Warhol collectible eaux de parfum.  Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Montauk, an androgynous male-female summer perfume, takes a new approach to the genre of beach scent:  It riffs on the duality of country and city, rural and urban.  Not your usual summer vacation fragrance, it was inspired by Warhol’s forays to Long Island’s farthest reach.

Warhol descends on the East End

On the lookout in 1971 for a seaside retreat, Warhol rejected the stately Hamptons, preferring what’s been described as the more populist Polynesian-Tudor-Motel Six design sensibility in Montauk.  Along its windswept cliffs, he came upon and purchased a secluded 1931 twenty acre estate—perfect for entertaining.  Its name was Eothen (Ancient Greek for “at first light”), and its five blue-shingled clapboard houses—“between the ocean and the swamps,” as he put it—soon became a magnet for the jet set.  (After Warhol’s death in 1987, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts donated 15 acres of the estate to the Nature Conservancy, which created the Andy Warhol Preserve in 1992.)

The scent

The fragrance captures the improbable descent of disco-mania on an unassuming fishing-village and nearby woodlands.  Imagine a windswept Montauk sunset hinting at the steamy, sexy nighttime to come.  In this twilight zone, the fresh and tangy initial flavors of blueberry and wild bergamot give way, first to sultry, sexy hyacinth, lily of the valley, and honeysuckle, and then to rich, clean forest-by-the-sea aromas—silver maple, red oak, driftwood, and amber.  What we have here is a cunning interplay of rustic and urban.

The bottle

Depicting Andy Warhol Montauk as the world’s first twilight beach scent, the bottle’s surface design displays Warhol’s iconic Sunsets, dating from1972—one year after the artist discovered Montauk.  His Sunsets series consist of 632 unique screen prints of a highly stylized, abstracted sunset—each print displaying subtle variations and permutations in its bands of stunning, vibrating colors.  As Warhol once said,     “The idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting.”.

So taken were we at Bond No. 9 with Warhol’s Sunsets that we chose four of them, to display in pairs on the front and back of two bottles—giving customers a choice when buying this scent. One option features a chrome yellow and a gentle blue sun disc, centered between misty shades of pink and blue.  The other bottle depicts two versions of a washed-out, corona’ed blue sun, surrounded by deeper, stormier, otherworldly pinks and blues.

Kicking off summer 2010, Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Montauk makes its timely arrival on-counter Memorial Day.
